Who Was Oakes Ames?
Oakes Ames was a visionary leader, industrialist, and U.S. congressman instrumental in the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad. His contributions to American history left an enduring legacy, and in honor of his accomplishments, the Ames family commissioned this magnificent hall—now one of Massachusetts’ most treasured historical landmarks.
An Architectural Marvel
Designed in 1881 by H.H. Richardson, one of America's most influential architects, Oakes Ames Memorial Hall is an exceptional example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. The Hall's prominent hilltop location and sweeping grand staircase were thoughtfully shaped by Frederick Law Olmsted, the father of American landscape architecture, who collaborated with Richardson on the site design.
